Ginger preserve is often ignored but this unsung hero of the pantry deserves the limelight. At first sweet and fruity it finishes with a warming hit of ginger. While its versatility means it’s just as delicious as a topping for porridge, with a handful of nuts or seeds, as it is spread over hot toast. Nor does it end with breakfast, it’s divine in fruit cakes or even, as sauce for pork or chicken.
